Have you ever tried to follow a story where the villain had four different names? It would be impossible to keep track, yet that is exactly what happens in the world of cyber security. A single hacking group can be referred to by entirely different names depending on which company is reporting on them, whether it is Microsoft, Google, CrowdStrike, or another security firm. This inconsistency is not just confusing; it slows down how quickly experts and the businesses they defend can respond to attacks.
To tackle this problem, Microsoft and CrowdStrike have announced plans for a unified naming system for hacking groups. The idea is to assign each cyber criminal gang one standard label that everyone agrees on. It is more than just cleaning up messy terminology. The goal is to make it faster and easier to understand who the attackers are, how they operate, and how best to stop them. At present, one company might call a group Salt Typhoon while another calls the same threat GhostEmperor or OPERATOR PANDA, making it difficult to connect the dots when every second counts.
The new approach will organise groups by type and origin, using weather-themed names. For example, Chinese state-backed hackers will carry the term Typhoon, Russian groups will be identified with Blizzard, and other categories such as ransomware gangs or commercial spyware developers will be given names including Tempest, Storm, or Tsunami. It is a straightforward concept but one with significant potential to cut through confusion and strengthen cyber defences.
For businesses, this clarity matters more than it might first appear. With everyone speaking the same language, threat intelligence becomes sharper, warnings are less likely to be overlooked, and responses can be faster and more effective. Collaboration between major players like Microsoft, CrowdStrike, and Google helps level the playing field for smaller organisations, ensuring they benefit from improved communication and coordination. It is the kind of behind-the-scenes change that may not make headlines but could have a real impact on keeping your business safe. If you want help strengthening your protection against cyber attacks, now is the time to act.
