It’s a familiar frustration: opening a document or presentation only to find that key information is trapped inside an image or chart that’s impossible to interpret. Microsoft is working on a new feature that could change that, particularly for people with accessibility needs. It’s called Describe Image, and it uses local AI built directly into Windows 11 to generate detailed descriptions of images, graphics and charts instantly.
Describe Image is part of the new Copilot+ PC experience, where AI runs locally on the device rather than in the cloud. When users select the option from the Click to Do menu, the system analyses the chosen image and produces a natural language summary. The first time it runs, the PC installs the models it needs, but after that everything happens on the device itself. No data or images are sent elsewhere, keeping the process private and secure.
The feature is currently available to Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel using Snapdragon powered Copilot+ PCs, with support for AMD and Intel versions on the way. While it may seem like a small update, the potential impact is significant. It means a team member with a visual impairment can instantly understand complex visuals, or a busy professional can get a quick overview of what an image contains without switching tools or relying on someone else to explain it.
Accessibility features like this go beyond compliance. They make technology more inclusive, helping every employee work more efficiently and confidently. When people can access information independently, collaboration improves and productivity rises. Describe Image is another example of how Microsoft is refining Windows 11 to adapt to the needs of real users, ensuring technology fits around people rather than forcing people to adapt to technology.
