At last: Sync passkeys across your devices

For many people, forgotten passwords and endless reset emails have become a routine frustration. Constantly creating, remembering and updating complex passwords slows work down and increases the risk of weak or reused credentials. Microsoft is now taking another step towards removing that problem by allowing passkeys to sync across devices using a Microsoft account in Edge.

Passkeys are designed to replace traditional passwords with a more secure and simpler method of signing in. Instead of typing combinations of letters, numbers and symbols, users verify their identity using built in device security such as facial recognition, fingerprint scanning or a PIN. Based on the FIDO2 standard, passkeys link login credentials directly to a device, which means there is no password for attackers to steal and no easy way for phishing scams to capture sensitive details.

Until recently, passkeys were typically stored only on the device where they were created. If that device was lost, damaged or replaced, access to accounts could become complicated. With the latest Edge update, passkeys can now be securely stored and synced through a Microsoft account, protected by encryption and an additional verification layer through Microsoft Password Manager. This allows users to sign in on a new Windows 11 device and have their passkeys available without the risk of lockouts.

Security remains central to the design. Synced passkeys are encrypted in the cloud and protected with multiple safeguards, offering the same level of security as local storage while adding greater flexibility. For businesses, this shift means fewer password resets, fewer support requests and reduced exposure to phishing attacks. As passkeys continue rolling out across Windows 11, and support expands to other platforms, the move towards a password free workplace is becoming far more practical and far less disruptive.
