FBI issues new ransomware warning

Ransomware is one of the most damaging threats facing businesses today, and the FBI has issued a new warning about a fast growing group called Interlock. They appeared in late 2024 and are already targeting organisations across North America and Europe. Their method is straightforward and highly disruptive. They break into systems, steal sensitive data, encrypt everything they can reach and then demand payment within a short deadline. If the victim refuses, they threaten to leak the stolen files online, creating both operational and reputational damage.

Interlock uses tactics designed to catch people off guard. They create fake browser updates, mimic security prompts and set up malicious websites that trick users into clicking without realising the risk. Once inside a network, they deploy tools that allow them to move around quietly, steal passwords, monitor activity and lock down important files. They have developed attacks for both Windows and Linux, which means almost any business could be affected. Smaller organisations are particularly at risk because attackers often see them as easier targets with fewer security resources.

The consequences of an attack can be severe. Losing access to client information, financial records or essential systems can bring operations to a halt. Even when recovery is possible, the damage to reputation and trust can last far longer than the downtime. This is why the FBI is urging businesses to strengthen their defences now rather than wait until they are facing an emergency. Protecting systems, tightening access and improving monitoring can significantly reduce the chance of an attack succeeding.

Key recommendations include keeping systems updated, enabling multi factor authentication, filtering access to malicious websites, segmenting networks to limit the spread of an infection and using security tools that can detect suspicious activity early. These steps may sound technical, but they are far easier and cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of a ransomware incident. Interlock is active and expanding, and preparation today can prevent serious disruption tomorrow. If your business needs support improving its security posture, expert guidance is available.
