Copilot could soon auto-open in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft is continuing to double down on AI, and one of its latest moves is testing a feature that makes Copilot open automatically when you launch Microsoft Edge. Currently, users must click the Copilot icon in the sidebar to use it, but the proposed change would have it open and ready as soon as you launch your browser or start a new tab. While some users will appreciate having an AI assistant always available, others may find it intrusive. Either way, it’s clear that Microsoft wants Copilot to become a core part of the Edge experience.

Another feature being trialled is an “Ask Copilot” option in the Settings menu, which could allow users to get help with browser configurations without digging through menus. If implemented effectively, this could save businesses time and reduce the need for IT support.

The potential benefits for Edge users include faster troubleshooting by asking Copilot directly instead of searching online or contacting support, having AI always on standby for tasks like summarising content or composing emails, and improved security through a new AI-powered “Scareware Blocker” that detects scam websites in real time.

While there’s no guarantee these features will be fully rolled out - since Microsoft often tests in Edge Canary and doesn’t always follow through - they align with the company’s broader push to integrate AI across its platforms. The auto-open Copilot feature could be a welcome addition for users who enjoy AI-enhanced browsing, though it may raise privacy concerns if it's always active.

Ultimately, if Microsoft allows users to toggle these features on or off, this update could prove both powerful and flexible. If you’re thinking about using Copilot or want help getting started, we’re here to assist - just reach out.
