Many organisations have invested in Microsoft Copilot with the expectation that it will save time, boost productivity and make everyday work easier. The challenge is knowing whether it is actually being used. Once the initial rollout is complete, it can be difficult to tell if Copilot has become part of daily routines or if it is sitting unused on desktops.
Microsoft is addressing this with a new Copilot Dashboard feature called Benchmarks. Available inside Viva Insights in Microsoft 365, it provides visibility into how Copilot is being adopted across an organisation. It shows how many employees are actively using Copilot, which apps they are using it in and how frequently they return to it, offering a clear view of real usage rather than assumptions.
Benchmarks also add valuable context by comparing usage against similar organisations. Companies can see how their Copilot adoption stacks up against others of a similar size, industry or region. This makes it easier to understand whether teams are leading, keeping pace or falling behind. Microsoft states that all comparison data is anonymised and aggregated, with privacy protections built in, so individual users or organisations are not exposed.
From a business perspective, this insight can be powerful. Many AI initiatives fail to move beyond pilot stages because adoption stalls or confidence is lacking. Benchmarks help highlight where that is happening and where extra training or support may be needed. Rather than monitoring individuals, the focus is on understanding patterns and enabling progress. With clearer insight into how AI tools are used, organisations can take practical steps to ensure Copilot delivers real value instead of becoming an underused investment.
